2008 Legislative Issue Poll

 

The West Shore Chamber of Commerce is preparing their legislative mission and strategies

for 2008. To help identify the issues of concern to our membership, we are conducting the

following poll.  Rate the issues below according to how they affect you and your business. 

If you are concerned with other issues that are not listed, indicate those in the comment box. 

 

Please take the time to respond as your input is vital to our 2008 planning.  Advocacy is at the

heart of the West Shore Chamber's mission and banded together, we can make a real

difference in affecting positive change, but only if you respond!  Thank you in advance

for your thoughts.

 

New!  Issue of the Month.  Energy is an issue of vital interest to our legislators right now. 

As part of its' mission, the West Shore Chamber of Commerce is keeping a close eye on

the many bills concerning energy that are currently making their way through legislation.

In which types of energy would you like to see Pennsylvania invest?

Green Energy (ethanol, bio-diesel fuels, wind and solar power).

Nuclear Energy.

Expansion of oil drilling, and coal.

Education and Workforce Development

To compete in today’s global economy, businesses depend on finding, educating and training the best workforce in the world. Current legislative Issues under this category include the “No Child Left Behind Act”, measuring student performances, and teacher pay for performance.

Energy

A growing economy relies on attaining an affordable, diverse, clean and secure energy supply.  Current legislative issues under  this category include greenhouse gas reduction, alternative energy sources, energy taxes and tax credits.

Government Reform

Small and large businesses alike depend on a fair, open,  pro-growth, pro-business legislature.  Current legislative issues under this category include open records legislation, the PA election code, campaign contributions, government spending, and public official compensation.

Healthcare and Health Insurance

Keeping the cost of health insurance reasonable and promoting a healthy workplace environment is necessary to promote a healthy bottom line.  Current legislative issues under this category include the proposed Pennsylvania Health Care Plan, long term care tax credits, the merger of the two “Blues”, and government mandated health insurance, Mcare abatement.

Labor

It is to a business's advantage to create a fair and equitable workplace that recognizes their workers as their most important asset and rewards them accordingly.  Current legislative issues under this category include union open ballot legislation, compensation laws, anti-discrimination laws, employment of illegal aliens, government mandated rest and lunch periods, and minimum wage cost of living increases.

Tort Reform

America’s legal system is the world’s most expensive. Frivolous lawsuits, excessive damage awards, and abusive trial lawyer practices, all have a negative effect on businesses and are contrary to a growing economy.  Current legislative issues under this category include limits on comparative negligence, establishing and evaluating an administrative medical liability system to restore fairness and reliability to the medical justice system, and promoting patient safety by fostering alternatives to current medial tort litigation.

Taxes

Experience shows that lowering tax rates encourages a growing economy.  Current legislative issues under this category include amending the Tax Reform Code providing for a small business health savings account tax credit, property tax reduction, economic development subsidies, and the youth employment incentive tax credit, expansion of sales tax.

Transportation

Economic growth and prosperity cannot be sustained without a superior transportation infrastructure.  Current legislative issues under this category include the tolling of I-80, the leasing of the PA Turnpike, energy efficiency, emergency and weather operations, and placing idling restrictions on commercial diesel vehicles.
